The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
